So here’s the thing about great interior design: It’s more than the way a room looks. It also creates a feeling, an emotional connection. And, of course, it needs to be functional in a way that fits your lifestyle.

Put it all together, and you’ve got stylish, comfortable living spaces that reflect your personality – in other words, spaces that feel like home.

That’s why I love what my friends at Karndean Designflooring are doing, with a cool new way to choose a floor that’s perfect for the vibe you want to achieve.

Karndean Design Aesthetics provide interior design guidance to shape the look, feel and function of an entire space. Each aesthetic represents a distinctive style and mood, with curated flooring recommendations to help bring the aesthetic to life. Basically, you can explore the aesthetics to see which one most closely represents your style and personality, then use Karndean’s recommendations to choose a floor you’ll love.

Here’s a quick look at each aesthetic:

Prana

Let’s start with Prana, which is actually a yoga term that refers to the calm and relaxation of breathing exercises. Yep, the mood here is all about comfort, renewal and a sense of balance. From a flooring perspective, think warm, natural tones … or maybe even something a bit earthy and cozy.

In CTRL

The second Karndean aesthetic is In CTRL, which is a minimalist approach that’s influenced by the sleek technology we use every day. This one emphasizes seamless functionality and minimizing distractions, so from a flooring perspective, you’ll want to think in terms of clean and neutral, without a lot of color variation. If you’re going with a wood look (rather than stone), you’d want to avoid anything with a lot of knots.

Mix + Max

The third Karndean aesthetic is a really fun one – Mix + Max. It’s pretty much what it sounds like, with lots striking patterns and mood-enhancing colors to stimulate the senses. But here’s what’s a little surprising – the flooring should actually be a bit more traditional. You want it to balance the space, instead of competing with the rest of the room. If you do want something eye-catching, think in terms of timeless flooring patterns that have been used for decades, like chevron or herringbone.

Pick The Perfect Floor

So – any of the aesthetics speak to you? The reality is, most people bring a blend of influences to the spaces they’re designing. But the Karndean aesthetics are a great starting point for finding the right floor.

And one last thing: Karndean has a cool online tool that allows you to visualize your favorite flooring designs in your home. Just upload a photo of the room you’re designing and go from there!
